Superman is like no other comic book super hero, and truly stands above the rest. There have been multiple forms of entertainment with superman as the star, but very few live up to the name. Superman is a new iOS game from Chillingo which has you play as the man of steel saving Metropolis day after day. You get Superman’s well known powers and new powers including heat vision, super strength, super speed, and super breath. To control Superman you’re given a virtual joystick and two action buttons as you battle convicts, soldiers, drones, missiles, helicopters, fire, rocket launchers, space junk, and more.
There are 18 levels with each one giving you a couple waves, and then a final major alert to stop. There isn’t much depth to the game, and it comes to a finish awfully quickly. The game has you playing as Superman, but the gameplay itself has been seen before in Chillingo’s game, The Hero. In The Hero you fly around using special powers, and Superman feels exactly the same. The difference between the two are few, and Superman even features similar enemy attacks, except they have different names and designs.
If you’ve ever played The Hero, than Superman will feel exactly the same except it’s shorter, and far less polished. The Hero has an outstanding visual design, and there;s plenty of depth and challenge to the gameplay which is definitely lacking in Superman. With Superman, the visuals seem like they’re about 10 years old, and the forced control scheme is even more disappointing. There are really no redeeming qualities about the Superman game, as it comes a year and a half after The Hero, and is worse than that game in every single regard. Not only that, but it’s just a poor effort overall with bland and repetitive gameplay, basic graphics, and subpar controls.
